Kintzler, Catherine. Dix-Septième Siècle No. 298 (2023/1): 109-124.

Abstract:
Hating Theatre, Hating Opera, and Hating Dance in Classical France
This article examines the way in which, from Bossuet to Rousseau, the necessity of including dance in various spectacles (tragedy, opera, comédie-ballet) was debated in France. It was possible, all at once, to hate dance out of hatred of the theatre but also out of love of the theatre and hatred of the opera. But it was also possible, like Cahusac, to consider it as autonomous and absolutely necessary.
