Anyone of any standing in England around 1800 traveled to Bath, the fashionable spa town in southwest England. Jane Austen also lived in Bath for several years and unerringly satirized the local social scene in her novels.
This time, we, too, will head to the “Upper Assembly Rooms” and throw ourselves headlong into the revelry with country dances and cotillions from around 1800. “Playford’s Pleasure” will be joining us once again and will accompany us with lively live music.
Period costumes are very welcome but not required. An afternoon workshop will give us the opportunity to learn some of the more challenging dances or to brush up on them. A basic knowledge of country dances is required. We’ll announce the ball program in advance. The workshop and ball are held in German.
For the evening’s physical well-being, we ask participants to contribute something to the shared buffet at the ball—perhaps even something made from a Regency recipe? Please let us know in advance what you plan to bring so we can coordinate the selection.
