Abstract:
In early modern European identity, was otherness characterised by specific types of posture and demeanour, and special association with dancing? How did this interact with mainstream European dance practices? The article questions the interface between the early modern dance culture and the construction of standards of ethnicity and civility (the savage), social rank and customs (the peasant), religion and ritual (the witch).
