The choreographies of the Munich court dancing master Pierre Dubreil are an important testimony to the dance culture of the early 18th century: in the German-speaking world, most of the surviving stock of original dances can be traced back to him. Dubreil's dance sources bear witness to great ingenuity and a unique variety of forms.
Carola Finkel presents for the first time a detailed and, above all, complete account of Pierre Dubreil's life and work. She provides insights into the profession of the court dance master as well as into the dance and festive culture of the Munich court at the time of Electors Max Emmanuel and Karl Albrecht. The biography is supplemented by a catalog of Dubreil's dance sources with annotations of all contredanses and danses à deux as well as reproductions of all of the dance master's choreographies including two horse ballets.
